CASE Design/Remodeling, shares the biggest trends in kitchen remodels in Silicon Valley in 2018. Whether big or small, old or new, homeowners embarking on a remodeling project are often looking to simply maximize the space they live in. This is a challenge Kabel faces daily with his portfolio of clients.

"One of the most popular requests our clients ask for is to remodel kitchens with an open floor plan," explained Kabel. "Many older homes in the San Jose area are built with small, cramped, dark kitchens cut off from the rest of the house. Today's homeowners want open space kitchens where they can talk to family and friends while cooking or preparing meals."

Kabel explains there are multiple benefits to a kitchen remodel, including increased interaction among family members, opening up the space to allow for more natural light, and creating a more central location for eating and entertaining.

Kabel shares his four top trends from 2018 with homeowners who are deciding to remodel their kitchen.

A Modern Farmhouse Aesthetic

There is something so cozy about a modern farmhouse kitchen. It's a familiar and welcoming style mastered through balancing old and new finishes, furnishings and decor. Kabel explains, "we see many popular materials used in these types of kitchen styles from marble to honed black granite. For the island, a rustic table with open storage for wicker baskets and chunky cutting boards are on trend. Large farmhouse sinks paired with open shelving that display white flatware adds to the look and feel. And white cabinets and backsplashes are very popular in these kitchens, giving homes an airy, light feel."

A Color Mix in Cabinets

We have seen homeowners get more creative with their kitchen space, and one example of this is mixing up cabinet colors. "We are seeing homeowners select more variety when it comes to painting and staining their cabinets, versus just using one finish across the board," explained Kabel. "Examples include painted upper cabinets paired with stained lower cabinets, using a different color for the kitchen island cabinets to create an anchor piece in the space, or creating contrast by using light with dark shades."

Eat-in Kitchens

Dining rooms are becoming close to extinct in California, making kitchens the true heart of the home. Kabel explains how this transformation is playing out. "Many clients ask us to remove walls that exist between the kitchen and dining areas, creating an open, seamless space. With the kitchen island becoming the "hub" of the home, the kitchen is the perfect blend of work space meets social space, which is great for family bonding or entertaining."

Hidden Kitchen Hoods

Many of our clients are now asking for their kitchen range hoods to be concealed or built-in, as it's a great way to not only save space, but also to allow other design elements to be the main focal point of the space. Kabel explains, "We are seeing concealed hoods being implemented in small kitchen spaces, which often are visually cluttered when lots of appliances are out in the open. Many homeowners are also covering hoods with cabinets or other solid surface material. These work in almost any kitchen style, and can help a kitchen space look and feel more open and flowing."
