San Diego Coding Bootcamp LEARN Academy Continues To Help People Transition To Tech Careers - Just Remotely

LEARN academy is taking their classes remote and modeling them after how remote web development teams function in response to COVID-19.

LEARN academy, a coding bootcamp in San Diego, California, is adapting to the recent threat of COVID-19 by providing all of its services remotely starting immediately. This includes the entire three-month web developer curriculum, the one-month guaranteed internship program, and in-house career services. This adjustment will provide students with an experience that mimics how remote development teams operate.

In order to assist with a smooth transition into a virtual classroom, individuals interested in their April 27th, 2020 cohort will be provided a laptop for the duration of the course. This laptop will break the barrier of getting students the proper equipment needed to take the course remotely. Applications to this course are still open on the company’s website.

“We are in uncharted waters right now, and we are all learning new ways to communicate and simply exist in a society that is mostly online,” Chelsea Kaufman, LEARN academy CEO points out. “However, this is not going to stop us from helping people transition their careers into a field where they can continue to learn and grow as an individual and probably most importantly find stability in this ever-changing economy.”

Adjusting to this new situation, LEARN academy is providing students the entire on-site web development program remotely. Students will be able to access all aspects of the curriculum through GitHub, which includes video recordings of all lectures. Students will also work together in virtual pair-programming and with instructors via Slack and Zoom meeting rooms. While some internships at LEARN academy have already been remote, all of them moving forward will be switching to remote for the time being. Recent graduates and alumni will also work with the in-house Career Services Manager remotely so they can continue to advance in their tech careers.

Chelsea Kaufman, LEARN academy CEO, explains that “LEARN academy started out as a coding bootcamp created by software developers who want to train developers that they would want to hire. Teaching them the skills, tools, and languages that every developer needs to know in order to be successful on a web development team. This transition to a remote classroom environment has given us the opportunity to teach our students the tricks of the trade as a remote software developer. Working remotely has always been one of the perks of the industry.  We’re making some lemonade out of the situation and giving our students some additional tools in their tool belt. But besides being able to attend class in the comfort of your own home, there isn’t much change. Students are still collaborating and learning together; they are simply using a different medium to transmit the information. Our core values, collaboration, and community are still at the forefront of everything we do!”

One of the cornerstones of LEARN academy’s success has been its partnership in the local San Diego tech community. LEARN academy is working hand-in-hand with web development firms Notch8 and ZEAL as the classroom makes the transition to a virtual class. Both of these companies have spent years managing remote dev teams. It was important to LEARN that the new virtual classroom was modeled after a dev team and not after a typical online course.  Thanks to the expertise of these two agencies, LEARN is able to continue to provide a truly collaborative learning environment where students get the opportunity to learn the tools that they will need to be successful remote web developers.

“We’ve worked with LEARN academy for years. I’m in awe of their ability to bring diverse people together, ready folks with transferable skills, and build a community of avid learners,” states Adam Cuppy, Founder of ZEAL. “The world is in flux. With so many jobs going and staying remote, this puts LEARN in the ideal position to train the next wave of remote-ready developers; and as a remote-first company, ourselves, we’re honored to help them make that transition.”

About LEARN academy: LEARN academy was the first coding bootcamp established in San Diego, opening its doors in 2015.
