Sacramento Accident Attorney Russ Wyatt Warns About Dangers of Distracted Driving

The lawyers at the Wyatt Law Corp Car Accident Attorneys have seen a dramatic increase in accidents caused by distracted driving in the Sacramento area and are urging drivers to put down their phones.

Do you occasionally text and drive? If so, the attorneys at the Wyatt Law Corporation Car Accident Attorneys want to bring awareness to Sacramento area residents about the extreme dangers of distracted driving. The firm’s law practice focuses on helping people who were injured in car accidents, so these attorneys know first-hand just how dangerous distracting driving can be.

In 2017 and in the first part of 2018, Managing Attorney, Russ Wyatt has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of clients he’s helped whose accidents were caused by a distracted driver. In 2018 alone, almost 60% of his clients’ accidents occurred, at least in part, from distracted driving. Mr. Wyatt feels that most people are well aware of the dangers of drunk driving, but don’t quite understand just how dangerous distracted driving can be.

“I want people to know just how dangerous texting while driving can be. People know it’s risky, but can’t resist peeking at their phones periodically while driving. But I have clients calling me about car accidents nearly every week whose injuries were due to distracted drivers. People, please put down your phones and watch the roads!”
- Managing Attorney, Russell Wyatt

Distracted driving is not an isolated issue that only affects young people. In fact, according to the NHTSA, distracted driving is reaching crisis proportions.

That’s not just hyperbole. In a study described in Car and Driver Magazine, researchers found that reaction times for drivers who text can be even slower than reaction times for drunk drivers. In that study, a test driver found that while writing a text, his reaction time was .68 seconds more than the baseline when he was not texting. When he drove intoxicated with a BAC (blood alcohol level) of over .08, but was not texting, his reaction time increased by 0.60 seconds.

The NHTSA defines distracted driving as more than just texting. Distracted driving, in their view, is considered to be any dangerous activity that can potentially take your eyes off the road. Some common forms of distracted driving include:

• Talking or texting on your phone
• Getting directions on your phone while driving
• Eating and drinking
• Turning around while talking to people in your vehicle
• Adjusting your stereo
• Fiddling with your navigation controls

While it may take years of education, advocacy and tougher penalties before Sacramento and California drivers change their behavior and resist the temptation to text, the Wyatt attorney are hopeful that getting the word out will help bring awareness to the crisis.

Many of the Wyatt firm’s clients face a difficult path recovering from their injuries as they figure out how to pay medical bills while coping with missed work. While the attorney at the Wyatt firm are known for recovering large settlements for their clients, they also know that no amount of money can make up for what are sometimes life-altering injuries.

That’s why the Wyatt attorneys want to get the word out to in Northern California and in particular to those who live nearby and drive along the I80 corridor in Sacramento, Roseville and Fairfield, CA.
