Ryan Mercer, known to be a futurist, consultant, and advisor to non-profit research labs has finally announced his intention of selling his father’s voice as an NFT. After believing that a couple of dozen photos is all he has to remember his late father Mark Allan Mercer, Ryan found a microcassette tape with his name written in his father’s handwriting on the label.Mark used to work for the Indiana State Police and at the time of his passing, was a detective. And since his work required the use of microcassette tapes for notes and interviews, Ryan wondered if the tape, labeled with his name, is a personal message for him that he would somehow hadn’t discovered until recently. Unfortunately, it was not. Ryan found out that it was one of the tapes from their answering machine back in 1998.
Nevertheless, the voice belongs to his father. At first, Ryan listened in shock with tears realizing that after almost 23 years, he finally heard his father’s voice. And on March 17, 2021, he created an NFT of his late father’s voice to try and memorialize him 23 years after his death.
“Dad, you are now a unique digital asset. Your voice now exists as a non-fungible digital property,” said Ryan, as if talking to his father beside him. “You could barely operate an electric typewriter and now you ‘live’ on the Internet in the latest in blockchain development.”
