As newcomers to the US, she and her family have fought back through sickness, language barriers, and financial woes, yet she has managed to maintain laser-focus on her studies and on her future in service to others. Five years ago, the Abbrianos immigrated to the US from Italy. In their 40s, Martina’s parents started from zero, learned English, and worked their way up again in the US in order to build a better life for Martina and her three siblings.
Shortly after the move, Martina’s mother was diagnosed with a serious immune disease which required many different treatments including chemotherapy. Through it all, Martina says, “My mom kept working hard and stayed positive through her battle to support the family.” Witnessing her mother’s strength, love, and perseverance through hardship, Martina was emboldened to pursue her dreams and make her family’s sacrifice, in her own words, “worth it” by becoming a linguistics teacher, and helping others like the Abbrianos to know that hard work really does pay off.
Martina is currently majoring in Foreign Language Education and Spanish with minors in Linguistics and Ancient Greek at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. In addition to earning a 3.85 GPA while working 35 hours a week, Martina and her family are active members of the community, their neighborhood, and their local church.
Martina was selected as the recipient of the 2019 Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship after a rigorous application review process by the firm’s scholarship judging panel and a final live video round with all the finalists conducted by Rocky McElhaney. The monetary award is paid directly to the College of Charleston to leverage tuition costs.
About the Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship
The Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship was founded in honor of Max McElhaney, the late uncle of firm founder Rocky McElhaney. The Firm awards $2500 every year to a full-time student enrolled at an accredited college or university, who is majoring in English or History. Applicants must submit proof of enrollment, a personal statement, an essay on the student’s “gold standard of love,” a statement of financial need, and at least one recommendation. The scholarship winner is selected in July and is awarded in August.
The firm is now accepting applications for the 2020 scholarship award.
