The Rochester New York-based Periodontist offers an informational article on the topic of the relationship between gum disease and heart disease.

Perio Health Partners is pleased to announce the release of a new article on their website. The article is titled “The Alarming Link Between Periodontal Disease and Heart Disease”. Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease is a significant cause for tooth loss in adults and is also a major contributing factor in heart disease. The article defines the reasons for this link and provides tips for improving the health of the gums and to reduce the risk of heart ailments linked to periodontal disease.

Following a meal or first thing in the morning, the teeth often have a layer of plaque on the surface of the teeth. The plaque also extends between the teeth, as well as on the root surface of the tooth below the gumline. When the buildup is not removed promptly and properly it continues to build-up. The plaque consists of bacteria which irritates the gums and causes inflammation. The gums become red and tender and often bleed. The gums and bone begin to recede which leads to loose teeth.

The stages of gum disease include redness and puffiness, known as gingivitis, and continue on to tooth loss. The link between periodontal disease and heart disease is not clearly defined, but one theory is that more inflammation in the body leads to more risk of developing heart disease. Gum disease is an inflammatory condition. Chronic inflammation is a contributing factor in a number of diseases including arthritis, endometriosis, and heart disease.

The article goes on to provide tips for preventing periodontal disease. These include brushing and flossing daily, scheduling regular visits with the dentist and dental hygienist, and eating a diet which promotes optimal heart and dental health. The body is a complete unit and healthy habits will affect every part of the body.
