Research Shows That the Pandemic May Have Changed Consumer Behaviour Forever

Research from The British Hamper Company reveals that the Covid-19 pandemic may have permanently affected many industries. Good search trends data shows that many people's behaviour may have changed for good.

At The British Hamper Company, Managing Director James Tod and Corporate Sales Manager Alice Tod have been researching consumer behaviour during the Covid-19 pandemic. They conclude that behaviour may have changed for good, with growing use of the internet and online shopping.

The British Hamper Company decided to use Google Trends to investigate how the pandemic has impacted search trends after seeing how changes in consumer behaviour affected their own business. They researched topics such as eating out and ordering in, as well as those relating to their own industry, such as gift-giving and celebrations. The company observed higher search results for food hampers, gift delivery, and birthdays at home.

Speaking about a trend graph for the search term "food hampers", Alice Tod said: "We believe that the lockdown has maybe changed the way in which people will shop for food in the future. Whilst the trend graph shows a decline from the main lockdown period, the trend shows people are still searching more than at any other point in the previous five years. Again this could be an example of people using the service for the first time, liking it, and sticking with using the service from now on."

The company says that the pandemic has changed gift-buying behaviour in the UK for good. However, it wasn't just their own industry that they examined. They also took a close look at other changes in search behaviour during the pandemic, including searches relating to making bread and pasta at home, fitness and losing weight, gardening and self-sufficiency, and many more.

Another key area examined by The British Hamper Company's research is attitudes towards working from home. With many people making the move to working from home during the pandemic, they noticed spikes in searches for terms such as "work from home", "zoom", and even tech-related terms such as "green screen".

However, it's not all goods news for every industry. The British Hamper Company's verdict on whether the holiday travel industry has been permanently affected is that in the short-term, there has definitely been an impact. In the long-term, it could be more permanent. James and Alice Tod said it is clear that foreign holidays and flights have taken a significant hit, and it feels like there is a long way to go before the masses are happy to travel abroad. In the longer term, holidays abroad should grow in popularity again, especially if an effective vaccine is discovered.
