Rehab Expert Says Recent Crackdown is Proof Where Addicts Find Help is Critical

A prominent rehab expert points to the recent drug rehab center crackdown in New York City as an example of why addicts need to turn to legitimate centers for help.

A recent crackdown in New York City by Major Bill de Blasio has many drug addicts in New York City questioning where they will live in the immediate future. The so called “three-quarter houses” that populate the city are a cross between a traditional halfway house and total freedom, but recent light shed into the goings on in the houses have some advocates up in arms.

“This is disgraceful”, said a spokesman from Sober Gateway Treatment and Therapy Center. “We know from experience that if addicts don’t get the proper kind of treatment, they’ll likely fall into relapse. And for them to have to rely on someone who doesn’t have their best interests at heart is just heartbreaking.” Currently, it is estimated that there are about 600 of these houses located in the city, and while they aren’t directly funded by the government, they mostly exist on taxpayer monies. In fact, a recent investigation into these houses show that millions of dollars of public money has been used to fund the corrupt rehabilitation homes in some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. Some of the homes are suspected of participating in Medicaid fraud, while others have been convicted of illegally evicting residents in the middle of the night. There are also reports of rat infestations and building violations.

“We will not accept the use of illegally subdivided and overcrowded apartments to house vulnerable people in need of critical services,” said the major. “The city has already been working to identify these residences and this task force will accelerate inspections and enforcement, relocate residents where necessary, and make recommendations to end this terrible practice.”

The rehab spokesman says that finding a place for residents may be a challenge in a city that is already struggling to curb a serious drug addiction problem. Currently, more than 56,000 people need to be housed in shelters in the city each night. Blasio says that the investigations are set to continue at a slow pace while plans are drawn up to determine how to rehouse those addicts who are in need of critical services. “It’s a problem,” says the rehab spokesman, “that shows the extent of America’s problem with drug addiction, and the lack of appropriate services to combat the issue. We just need to get the word to addicts that there is help for their addictions. It just needs to come from the right drug and alcohol treatment center in order to see results.”
