Film director and wife acknowledge the late actor’s legacy by supporting African arts and AIDS charity

The film and television director Randall Miller has paid tribute to the late actor, Alan Rickman, by making a donation to Sponsored Arts For Education (S.A.F.E.), a Kenyan arts and AIDs charity. Together with his wife, the producer Jody Savin, Miller wanted to mark the fifth anniversary of Rickman’s extraordinary performance in his film, CBGB.

“I consider myself extremely privileged to have had the honor of working with Alan,” said Miller. “He was an immense talent and he left us way too soon. My wife Jody and I paid tribute to Alan the best way we knew how, by making a donation in his name to Sponsored Arts for Education.”

In CBGB, Rickman starred as Hilly Kristal, the flawed but visionary founder of New York’s iconic CBGB music venue, the club that launched the Ramones, Blondie, Lou Reed and many others. “When you think of Alan, you might picture him as polished villain in Die Hard or an evil wizard in Harry Potter,” Miller commented. “But, all of a sudden, he’s completely embodying this larger yet smaller than life, down on his luck New York Jew who believes he can reinvent rock and roll. That’s a transcendent dedication to the craft of acting.”

Rickman was known for generosity as well as his performances. Upon his death from pancreatic cancer in 2016, he bequeathed over $100,000 to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Sponsored Arts for Education, the Facial Surgery Research Foundation and the International Performers Aid Trust. He had trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. As a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Rickman performed in modern and classical theatre productions before launching a successful career in film and television.

S.A.F.E. is a Kenyan NGO and UK charity that uses the performing arts and community programs to educate, inspire and deliver social change. The organization focuses on promoting positive behavior change, specifically around HIV/ AIDS, peace, female genital cutting and clean drinking water.
