BrightStar Care of Racine is proud to become a sponsor of the upcoming 5k Walk for Bladder Cancer on May 4th, 2013.

The Racine 5k Walk for Bladder Cancer is being held to raise awareness and advance cancer research and education on behalf of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network.

According to the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (http://www.bcan.org), bladder cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. “Most people know nothing about it. This lack of public awareness leaves many bladder cancer survivors feeling isolated and alone.” stated fundraiser organizer Gina Hopper. Gina’s husband John received treatment for bladder cancer and today the Hoppers raise awareness with this annual fundraiser walk for this little-known and little-funded type of cancer.

The annual 5k Walk for Bladder Cancer will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4th. The walk will begin at the Fountain Hills Apartments located at 1100 Fountain Hills Drive. Registration begins at 10:30am.

Local and family-owned husband and wife team Jack and Sharon Louks own and operate BrightStar Care, a home care agency in Racine. BrightStar offers both medical and non-medical year-round home care services ranging from skilled nursing to companion care.

Sharon is also a Registered Nurse while Jack is on the Board of Directors of the Senior Companion Program and was a founding member of the Kenosha County Falls Coalition. As an active part of the community, the Louks regularly participate in and sponsor a variety of fundraisers and causes to support and increase awareness of life-threatening diseases.

Jack Louks added, “Sharon and I are passionate about the health and well-being of our friends, family members and neighbors in our community. It’s one of the reasons we love what we do. At BrightStar, we’re committed to offering the highest levels of quality and support to each and every person who receives care from us.”

BrightStar has recently been accredited by the Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest independent, nonprofit accrediting body in health care. Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission seeks to continuously improve health care for the public by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.

Jack and Sharon Louks encourage anyone in need of full time home care, hospice care, skilled nursing services or companion care to call their office at (262) 619-0414 to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation to discuss needs and create a customized plan of care during an in home visit.

BrightStar’s director of nursing will meet with either the family members or individual receiving the care to discuss needs and create a customized plan of care to help ease the transition and promote independence and well-being. Those interested to make a donation and register for the Walk for Bladder Cancer may go to www.bcan.org and click on Racine Walk or call Gina Hopper at (262) 960-3740.
