The 50th anniversary of the world’s most powerful race engine ever built has just gone by, but drag race fans can still revive the memories with the new men’s T-shirt launched by Quarter Mile Addiction. Factory engine horsepower wars are still popular among car makers, but this half a century old obsession can be traced back to the 426 Hemi engine produced in early 1960s. The engine represents three families of engines popular in their respective ages, and it all began at the 1964 Daytona 500 opening event. Chrysler’s engine beasts powered their cars to the first three spots, with four cars featuring in the top five. The story was repeated throughout the year, until other car makers objected to the engine not being available in showrooms. NASCAR thus banned the 426 Hemi from stock car racing.
The year 1966 saw the return of 426 Hemi with some detuning. By then the Funny Cars and the A/FX makes had turned on the heat, but were no longer popular in public sales. This led to the creation of two camps, Pro Stock and Funny Cars. Fifty years since its birth, the 426 Hemi is the precursor of most engines used today in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Mod races, and the old horsepower war still continues.
