The historic Portland’s White House bed & breakfast is reopening following the pandemic-related lockdown. Social distancing, mask-wearing & use of hand sanitizers will be strongly encouraged.

Portland’s White House, a historic bed & breakfast set in a massive Greek Revival mansion, is reopening its doors following the pandemic-related lockdown, announced owner Frank Groff. In accordance with Governor Kate Brown’s orders, guests and staff will be encouraged to abide by social distancing requirements and wear masks and gloves that will be provided to them. In addition, hand sanitizers will be placed in every room as well as in all common areas and staff will have their temperatures taken regularly as a precaution.

“We are pleased to announce the reopening of Portland’s White House and look forward to exceeding the expectations of our guests in terms of service and adherence to their safety,” said Groff, who with his partner, David Krause, restored the 1911 property after taking ownership in 2018. “We want visitors to explore our great city as we slowly start the reopening process and look forward to returning to some semblance of ‘normalcy.’”

Portland’s White House was open during the lockdown for micro-weddings and Zoom weddings where small parties of 10 or so were able celebrate the nuptials of their loved ones. The Zoom Weddings became particularly popular as scores of guests were able to witness the celebration virtually thanks to this popular web-based video conferencing tool.

Portland’s White House, which holds a place of honor on the National Historic Registry, was built for Oregon timber baron Robert Lytle, who spared no expense on its construction. He made it virtually fireproof with metal lath and plaster and tile roofs then carefully installed the very finest materials, including mahogany accents, wood floors and tasteful stained glass windows crafted by the Povey Brothers who were known as “The Tiffany of the Northwest.”

Groff and Krause spent $1 million undertaking the extensive remodel of both the Main House and Carriage House that feature 9 ensuite bedrooms, grand common areas and an 85-seat ballroom that is ideal for wedding receptions, corporate affairs, birthday celebrations, etc.
