Historic Portland Oregon Bed & Breakfast In NE Irvington Cited For Extraordinary Design & Workmanship. Awarded by Coverings after $1 Million Dollar Renovation of Portland's White House B&B.

Portland’s White House, a luxurious and historic bed & breakfast in the Irvington neighborhood, was presented with the Coverings Installation and Design (CID) Award for the extraordinary tile work that was part of a $1 million restoration, announced Frank Groff, who owns the 1911 Greek Revival mansion with his partner, David Krause. Columbia River Tile & Stone Inc, also in Portland, OR, was acknowledged by the international organization for its exceptional design and workmanship.

All 12 baths maintain a consistent design style that hearkens back to the early 1920s with a slight contemporary edge. In the main house, tile master Jeff Occhipinti finished the floors using hexagon cut Bianco Carrara marble with absolute black granite tile accents and walls made from 3” x 6″ snow white polished Carrara marble laid in a traditional brick pattern. In the carriage house, the design was the same but he used Calcutta marble instead.

According to its website, “the Coverings Installation & Design (CID) Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in the design and installation of tile and stone in both residential and commercial projects. An esteemed panel of notable editors and leading designers, who evaluate submissions based on execution, original usage and overall design and purpose, give special recognition to those projects exemplifying spectacular tile and stone applications.”

“We are delighted that this prestigious international organization recognized the extraordinary work done by Jeff Occhipinti and the Columbia River Tile & Stone team,” said Groff. “Considerable time, effort and expense was invested to ensure that this restoration was done perfectly so this award means a lot to all of us.”

Built in 1911, Portland’s White House holds a place of honor on the National Historic Registry. The B&B and event venue site was built as the family home for Oregon timber baron Robert Lytle, who spared no expense on its construction. He made it virtually fireproof with metal lath and plaster and tile roofs then carefully installed the very finest materials including mahogany accents, oak wood floors and tasteful stained glass windows crafted by the Povey Brothers, who were known as “The Tiffany of the Northwest.” It features a formal dining room, 85-seat ballroom, game room, parlor and a sweeping staircase that makes it way to 6 grand ensuite bedrooms. The Carriage House has 3 additional ensuite rooms. For more information, visit portlandswhitehouse.com or call (503) 287-7131. Portland’s White House is located in the affluent Irvington neighborhood at 1914 NE 22nd Avenue, Portland, OR 97212.
