Portland’s White House B&B And Events Venue Makes Makes Room For Boomer Brides

Portlands White House is following a recent trend by creating special wedding packages for baby boomers. Couples on their second or third marriages are seeking intimate, luxury experiences.

Portland’s White House, a luxury bed & breakfast set in a historic Greek Revival mansion, is now offering special wedding packages aimed at “boomer brides.” The popular wedding venue is packaging wedding ceremonies, receptions and overnight stays together to offer older couples an elegant event without “breaking the bank,” says owner Frank Groff.

“While marriages among Millennials are on the decline, surprisingly there is an uptick in weddings among Baby Boomers,” said Groff, who with his partner, David Krause, renovated the 1911 property to the tune of $1 million when the purchased it in 2018. “Many of these couples are on their second, third or fourth marriages and are eschewing church ceremonies in favor of alternative settings. Most are looking for more smaller events with close friends and family rather large scale spectacles, so they are turning to venues like Portland’s White House. And the fact that we offer overnight accommodations is a plus for those who are seeking an overall relaxed, intimate experience rather than a simple ceremony and reception”

According to the latest Gallup poll on marriage, 20% of Millenials 18 to 30 are married, compared to 32% of Gen X-ers and 40% of Baby Boomers when they were the same age. Also, the divorce rate is growing among boomers and many of them are forming new romantic relationships that result in marriage.

Portland’s White House, which holds a place of honor on the National Historic Registry, was built for Oregon timber baron Robert Lytle, who spared no expense on its construction. He made it virtually fireproof with metal lath and plaster and tile roofs then carefully installed the very finest materials, including mahogany accents, wood floors and tasteful stained glass windows crafted by the Povey Brothers who were known as “The Tiffany of the Northwest.”

Groff and Krause spent $1 million undertaking the extensive remodel of both the Main House and Carriage House that feature 9 ensuite bedrooms, grand common areas and an 85-seat ballroom that is ideal for wedding receptions, corporate affairs, birthday celebrations, etc.
