An insider in the flashlight industry remarks on the latest release of a new comic strip in the wildly popular XKCD site.

The highly popular web comic site XKCD.com has just published a new strip and the subject is highly enlightening – flashlights. Cartoonist Randall Munroe is best-known for his sarcastic, humorous take on everyday subjects. The humor in the flashlight strip hinges on the existence of “flashlight enthusiasts” on the Internet, and the capabilities of today’s high-tech flashlights. The two protagonists in the strip talk reminisce about how bad flashlights used to be “when we were kids,” then go outside with a new high-tech focused beam flashlight to test it out.

“See how it lights up the whole forest?” asks one.

“…the trees are on fire,” the other replies.

“Today’s flashlights won’t really start a forest fire,” one industry insider responded when asked about the comic strip. “But they certainly are capable of illuminating far more than old-fashioned hand-held flashlights – and LED bulbs used in many modern survival flashlights burn far cooler and last much longer than old-fashioned incandescent bulbs.”

As for the idea that there are flashlight enthusiast groups on the Internet, the insider – an entrepreneur who distributes My Lite Beam handheld flashlights – says it’s absolutely true. “Flashlights are one item most commonly mentioned as essential survival gear, and a staple in nearly any list of “things to have on hand in an emergency.”

“A working flashlight is an essential tool in many emergency situations,” he continued. “Whether you’re facing a power outage or dealing with a flat tire on the side of the road, having a good flashlight is essential.”

The newest range of handheld flashlights feature long-lasting, low-energy-consumption LED bulbs, which virtually eliminates the problem of batteries that die just when you need them most. Many also have adjustable beams, allowing the user to light up a room-size area for basic illumination or aim the beam of light up to 3,000 feet ahead. They may also include a strobe or signal capability, so that the flashlight can serve as an emergency signal to alert others for help.

When asked what consumers should look for when buying a basic flashlight for the home or auto, he said that the best flashlights are made of sturdy, lightweight materials, and use a variety of battery types.

“Too many people have fallen for the allure of rechargeable everything,” he added. “Everyone should have at least one handheld flashlight that uses regular alkaline or lithium-ion batteries for situations where there is no power to recharge the flashlight once the batteries die.”
