A holiday company in Cornwall is reporting an increase in enquiries and bookings for its holiday cottages following the broadcast of Poldark which is set in the county.

Cornish holiday company ABC Mousehole Cottages is reporting a surge in bookings for its holiday accommodation following last week’s airing of Poldark on television.

The BBC’s new costume drama hit the television screens last Sunday evening, bringing dramatic scenes of the Cornish coast and countryside into millions of British homes.

As a result of the screening, phones at ABC Mousehole Cottages have been buzzing with enquiries about holiday cottages close to locations featured in the TV programme.

Simon Tolson, Managing Director, said: “We knew Poldark would be popular but we were surprised by the number of new enquiries we have received this week since the first episode aired.

“With seven more episodes left in the series, we expect Poldark to have a dramatic positive impact on bookings for our collection of cottages in Mousehole this summer.”

The remake of the 1970s costume drama featuring heartthrob actor Aiden Turner in the lead role, tells the story of Ross Poldark and his attempt to rebuild his fortune after returning from fighting in the American War of Independence to find his family business in ruins.

The first episode of Poldark has received positive reviews from critics who have praised the fine acting and attractive cinematography helped, of course, by the stunning Cornish scenery in the filming locations.

Malcolm Bell, who heads the local tourism body Visit Cornwall, expects Poldark to have a ‘Downton’ effect on local tourism – attracting hoards of fans to Cornwall as ITV’s Downton Abbey has done for Highclere Castle.

Viewers watching the opening episode of Poldark were treated to some stunning scenes of rugged Cornish scenery. Filming locations included Charlestown Harbour, Porthcothan and Gunwalloe Fishing Cove.

The holiday properties represented by ABC Mousehole Cottages are all located in the fishing harbour of Mosuehole near Penzance, close to many of the locations used for filming. Porthgwarra Cove – featured in one of the opening scenes as Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall from the war in America – is just down the road near Land’s End.

Mr Cornish added: “With Easter just around the corner, this boost for local tourism couldn’t have come at a better time. We look forward to welcoming Poldark fans to this uniquely beautiful part of the world.”
