Philip Kapneck, Maryland Trade Ambassador for 40 years, may be the subject of a business biography. Ambassador Kapneck, who was instrumental in creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, never sought publicity, preferring to work behind-the-scenes, helping his fellow man. The Ambassador

American author, Robert Lustre, came up with the idea of writing about Philip Kapneck’s business life, after reading news stories about the Trade Ambassador’s extraordinary success bringing companies to America and throughout the United States. Lustre also learned that a great many people hold Philip Kapneck in high regard, some providing glowing quotations about the Ambassador.

He saw many lessons to be learned from the Ambassador’s positive attitude, hard work, and ethical methods. These lessons were too valuable not to be documented and passed on to others.

Lustre realized it might be possible to gather enough information from state, business and newspaper archives to make it happen.

Over the past few months, Robert Lustre had been contemplating a series of writings under the banner of “Unsung Heroes.” He said, “There are a few unsung heroes in the business sector. Most business people want to self-promote, but the unsung heroes, such as Philip Kapneck, do not seek publicity. Their stories are very valuable, because they can inspire others to take action, in an unselfish way, just as they did. I believe Phillip Kapneck’s story can help as many people as he already has helped throughout his career.”

According to newspaper reports, Philip Kapneck was first appointed Maryland Trade Ambassador by Governor Mandel, in 1974. The plan was to attract successful foreign businesses to Maryland, and have them create local jobs. Kapneck had already proven the model over the previous two years, when he went to Brussels, Belgium, to open a Maryland International Office there.

Over the next 40 years, Trade Ambassador Kapneck was reappointed to the position by each new Administration. In that time, the Ambassador attracted hundreds of thousands of companies, which created hundreds of thousands of jobs in the USA.

Two more things convinced Robert Lustre to start his research. The first was a quote from Bill McCaffrey, Maryland’s Finest Sports Talker. McCaffrey said “Maryland Trade Ambassador Phil Kapneck is not only the Maryland Industrial Ambassador, but also our State’s Good Will Ambassador.” The second thing was this story : Philip Kapneck Cuts Another Ribbon

It has been suggested that a book should be written about Ambassador Kapneck’s successful career over the past 40 years serving as Trade Ambassador, bringing business, industry and jobs to America.
