Paw Castle Publishes Comprehensive Toxic Food List For Dogs

Complete go-to list provided for dog owners to consult, answering questions of which foods dogs can and cannot eat

— According to recent statistics released from the APPA National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association, 79.7 million pet owning households exist in the US, representing a 50% increase over the past two decades. Pets, especially dogs, which exist in 54.4 million of the homes, are family members, requiring intense care, including special dietary needs. With this in mind, Paw Castle, an expert animal site, has drafted a go-to list of toxic food for dogs.

According to Mandy Herson, spokesperson for the informational site, because dogs are so often viewed as one of the family, owners often feel free to feed them table scraps. This can be acceptable, in some cases, but it's important to know which foods are palatable and which ones could cause dietary distress. Explains Herson, "As with any new food introduced to a dog's diet, start out with small servings. Once pet owners see how the puppy's stomach reacts, they can increase servings accordingly. We are commonly asked about a list of food dogs can't eat or more specifically, what foods it's ok for them to eat. With that in mind, we've created a comprehensive list for all pet owners to consult on a regular basis."

Herson goes on to say, "Most pet owners know the answer to, 'can dogs eat chocolate?', but others don't realize tomatoes are another no-no for dogs as well. While a terrific food for humans, these plants contain an ingredient known as solanine, which can be harmful to a dog. Solanine is found in the stems and leaves of tomatoes, and can cause gastrointestinal distress, resulting in adverse effects on the central nervous system of a canine. Higher levels of solanine are found in younger, green tomatoes. This is especially important to those people who have outdoor pets and grow their own tomatoes in the backyard."

Concluding, Herson states, "Dogs love their food, but it's important only to feed a dog foods that love them back, and keep them happy, healthy and out of the vet's office!"
