There are two compelling reasons why property-owners might want to act now to block more of the sun’s radiant heat in the summer. The first is that it’s the hottest time of the year making it ideal to plot the most effective position for a shade tree or two. The second reason is that the best tree planting months of September and October are just around the corner.
Private and commercial building owners could save up to 40% of their summer cooling costs by planting shade trees according to Arbor Day Foundation’s 2013 report into Energy-Saving Trees. A separate report by EIA confirms that average consumer energy bills in the State of Florida are now topping $2000 every year, of which 27% is dedicated to cooling homes in the State. So by planting shade trees, state residents can save up to $216 every year, on average.

Florida residents pay a higher proportion of their energy costs on cooling than any state according to EIA’s 2009 Residential Energy Consumption Survey; 4 times the national average. In dollar terms, this equates to $540 per annum on utility bills related solely to cooling. Simply by planting shade trees now you can grow an annual saving climbing to a maximum 40% or an average saving of around $216 every year at 2009 values.
Two more little known benefits of growing shade trees are available to Florida property-owners. Mature trees have an appraised value of up to $10k each according to the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers. As a collection, they can add 10% on top of the appraised value of your home say the USDA Forest Service. So by growing shade trees, property owners can build an asset over time that’s gaining in financial value and also paying some of the utility bills at the same time.
The other main advantage of shade trees is a significant lifestyle benefit. Just one mature tree will actively cool the nearby air at a rate equivalent to 10 single room air conditioners working 20 hours a day. That’s going to expand the living space of shade-tree owning residents to the outdoors, especially during the day.
