When the power crisis hit Texas early in 2021, Nolah Mattress CMO Stephen Light had dozens of mattresses lying around his Austin home. In the midst of developing a new model and surrounded by foam samples, he had an idea to keep him and his family warm. In an attempt to insulate the living room, he lined the walls with the mattresses he had on hand.Light shares this story in good humor, but he didn’t know then what 2021 had in store for Nolah, the mattress industry, and the supply chain at large.
Despite everything from the power crisis to material shortages and shipping delays, Nolah pulled it off. In 2021, the brand launched two new eco-friendly mattresses and an expanding line of bamboo sleep accessories.
Nolah Looks to Greener Solutions
“The past couple years have been a wake-up call in many ways, especially environmentally,” said Light. “Living in Texas, I never thought a snowstorm could leave us without power for days. But with climate change, it’s the new reality.”
According to Light, Nolah began with the mission to design a premium mattress without using memory foam, a material made with harsh, heat-trapping chemicals that Light calls “outdated.”
“Memory foam isn’t ideal for the environment or the human body,” said Light. “It traps body heat and can sink too far under your weight. Some sleepers find deep contouring comforting, but it misaligns the spine.”
The company's first three mattress models all use Nolah AirFoam™️, a proprietary polyfoam that’s CertiPUR-US certified-free of harmful chemicals. Light explained that it sleeps cooler, provides better pressure relief, and lasts longer than memory foam.
But with three foam mattresses under their belt, Nolah set their sights on another mission. In 2021, the company designed two latex models.
“We’re still a young company,” said Light. “From the beginning, we wanted to offer a truly natural option. This year, we finally got the chance to build it. We spent months testing models, and we finally got it right.”
Two New Latex Hybrid Beds
The new latex hybrid mattresses—the Nolah Natural and Nolah Nurture flippable kids mattress—put the environment and healthy sleep first. The beds feature all-natural and sustainable Talalay latex, organic cotton and wool, and recycled steel coils.
“In the mattress industry, eco-friendly means latex,” Light said. “It costs more, but it’s the ultimate mattress material. Harvesting latex is safe and sustainable, and a latex bed can easily last for 20 years.”
Sustainable and Silky-smooth Bamboo Bedding
The company also recently launched the Nolah Bamboo Sheet Set and will release more bamboo-based products in the upcoming months.
“Bamboo was part two of our plan,” said Light. “Like latex, it’s natural and sustainably sourced. But it’s also a superior material when it comes to comfort.”
Bamboo fabric has a soft and smooth touch, much like silk but at a lower price point. It’s breathable and wicks moisture, so it dries quickly and keeps cool through the night.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals
Nolah’s newest mattresses and bamboo bedding arrived just in time for the biggest shopping day of the year.
Both latex hybrid mattresses are now on sale for Black Friday, as are Nolah’s cooling and pressure-relieving AirFoam™ and AirFoam™ hybrid models. Customers can take up to $700 off mattresses and shop discounts on adjustable bases and other sleep accessories.
During the Black Friday sale, shoppers can take up to $50 off bamboo sheets, $30 off the Nolah Bamboo Waterproof Mattress Protector, and $20 off a two-pack of the new Nolah Squishy Pillow. The adjustable pillow features a breathable bamboo cover and shredded foam infill for maximum cooling.
Prioritizing Sleep in the New Year
“2020 and 2021 have been bad years for sleep,” said Light, and data confirms that the pandemic has disrupted sleep patterns on a national scale.
“Our team talks a lot about how working from home and leaving home less changes the way you sleep,” he continued. “We have research coming out soon that we hope will help people see how important it is to set boundaries. Make it a new year’s resolution to put your phone away before bed or stop hitting snooze. It’s hard, but even small changes can make a big difference.”
