Kao and istyle Establish the RNA Co-creation Consortium
On March 11, 2024, Kao Corporation and istyle Inc. jointly established the RNA Co-creation Consortium, centering on Kao’s sebum RNA monitoring*1 technology. Through the Consortium, the companies aim to achieve business co-creation and sustainable growth of the beauty and health industries. Kao, which will provide sebum RNA monitoring technology, and istyle, Japan’s largest beauty-specialized platform, will serve as directors of the Consortium and have set up a steering committee. Co-creation partners KOSÉ Corporation, MatsukiyoCocokara & Co., Kirin Holdings Company, Limited, Perfect Corp. and Healthcare Systems Co., Ltd., all leading companies in their respective fields, will act as coordinator companies. The future aim of the Consortium is to create a framework, based on RNA information, that offers consumers a more satisfying selection of personalized products and services. At the same time, by fine-tuning supply and demand, the Consortium hopes to establish a sustainable consumption cycle that does not burden people or the environment. *1 Kao News Release dated June 10, 2019 Kao’s original non-invasive analytical method for monitoring RNA - Discovery of the presence of human RNA in sebum Background With the 100-year lifespan fast becoming reality, there is an increased focus on living life healthily and comfortably. A wealth of information and beauty and health services is available, but many consumers are bewildered by the profusion of alternatives available and wonder what products and services suit them best. This has made the beauty and health industries increasingly aware of the need for creating standards according to which consumers can obtain correct knowledge about their current condition and judge what they need most to accomplish their goals out of the numerous alternatives available. Meanwhile, businesses are expected to provide diverse products and services and conduct their activities in line with ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) principles. By suggesting the quickest and most appropriate choices from among numerous alternatives, individual businesses providing services can create new markets that are less burdensome to people and the environment. Sebum RNA monitoring technology Kao developed sebum RNA monitoring technology, a method for global analysis of RNA extracted from facial sebum collected with oil blotting film. (Figure 1) Whereas DNA is information particular to an individual that remains the same throughout the person’s lifetime, RNA varies from day to day depending on environmental factors like physical condition, diet, exercise, stress or UV rays, which makes it useful for learning about the skin’s condition at a particular time. Kao has so far announced research results indicating that sebum RNA can help hint at various skin and other physical conditions and has the potential to enable early detection of pediatric atopic dermatitis or Parkinson’s disease. Figure 1. RNA monitoring process: Collection of facial sebum, extraction and refinement of RNA, analysis of data Consortium starting point initiative by Kao and istyle In 2022, Kao and istyle began working on a study grouping individuals with similar sebum RNA expression information to explore their tendencies in preferences for cosmetics*2 , using facial sebum collected from consenting members of the @cosme website operated by istyle. Following analysis of clustering based on similarity of sebum RNA expression information, Kao announced that the study had discovered that there are at least two distinct skin types*3 . Based on the sebum RNA and image information obtained through the two companies’ collaboration, technology was also developed using photos of faces to classify the skin types (skin gene mode), something which had previously only been possible by collecting sebum directly from the skin. *2 Kao News Release dated March 14, 2022 Kao and istyle: Using Sebum RNA Monitoring Technology to Create Encounters with Cosmetics that Suit Individual Skin Types: Joint Initiative Aimed at Customer Satisfaction and Reduction of Product Waste to Launch from Spring 2022 *3 Kao News Release dated March 6, 2024 Skin Type Classification Using Sebum RNA Developed Two Skin Types with Different Gene Expression (RNA) Characteristics Discovered Aims and activities of the RNA Co-creation Consortium The work done by Kao and istyle so far has highlighted that using RNA information can potentially be useful as a criterion for selecting cosmetics. The two companies’ joint project sparked the creation of the RNA Co-creation Consortium, with the aim of working with different enterprises to create businesses centered on sebum RNA monitoring technology. The Consortium’s work will include setting and standardizing parameters for making, selling and selecting beauty and health care services, testing business use cases, supporting business tie-ups and other activities. Wide provision of health and beauty care and related services based on RNA information will enable consumers to choose more satisfying alternatives. The Consortium initiative can also motivate companies in various spheres of business, including beauty and health care, to propose solutions addressing consumers’ concerns and promote innovation in developing new products and services. The Consortium will invite a broad range of companies in the beauty, health and food industries to join, to involve the whole of the beauty and health industries, working toward the sustainable growth of the industry by combining the data and expertise of member companies to promote solutions for consumer and industry issues and create new value. CATL Founder Calls for Greater Collaboration to Solve Climate Change
CATL, a global leader in new energy technology, today called for more open innovation between businesses and countries in a bid to solve the challenge of climate change. Speaking at the One Earth Summit in Hong Kong, Dr. Robin Zeng, Chairman and CEO of CATL, announced that CATL is poised to share its technology and its Zero Carbon practices to anyone committed to accelerating the transition to green energy, electric transportation, and a circular economy – including competitors. "Now, more than ever, we must work together if we are to solve humanity's biggest problems, such as climate change," said Dr. Zeng. Continuous technological advancement is the key to achieving sustainability, Dr. Zeng said. He highlighted the investment CATL has made in research and development to maintain its position as the world's number one battery technology company. It now has more than 20,000 R&D staff worldwide and spent US$2.59bn on R&D in 2023. Its nearly 30,000 issued and pending patents worldwide cover a wealth of breakthrough technologies including the world's first 4C superfast-charging LFP battery which can deliver a range of 400km with just a 10-minute charge and the Qilin battery which can deliver 1,000km range on a single charge. Dr. Zeng outlined the significant steps CATL has taken to reduce its carbon emissions. Its four factories are already Zero Carbon, and all three facilities in the battery industry recognized by the World Economic Forum are CATL facilities. The company has also pledged to be carbon neutral in its core operations by 2025, and to ensure its supply chain is carbon neutral by 2035. The company has also taken significant strides in its recycling. In 2023, it recycled over 100,000 tons of battery waste. With its 90% recovery efficiency, it was able to recover 13,000 tons of lithium carbonate, vastly reducing the volume of mining needed and accelerating its contribution to the circular economy. "I think of our sustainability efforts as a single tree, but we have an ambition to create a forest," said Dr. Zeng. "We are willing to work with businesses, governments, investors and anyone interested in accelerating climate action. Together, to extend the Zero Carbon practice from factories to communities, cities, and more." In his speech, Dr. Zeng outlined three key benefits of open innovation: • Bridges technological divide: CATL shares its battery technology through its LRS (licensing, royalty, service) model and supports OEM partners with the construction and operation of battery plants. This helps them accelerate their operations, fast-tracking green energy transition. • Unlocks new, zero carbon scenarios: CATL is developing new ways to use battery technology to advance sustainability. For example, it is working with its network of partners on electric, unmanned mines, and battery swapping for both passenger cars and heavy-duty trucks. • Creates sustainable ecosystems: In the near future, EVs could become distributed energy storage facilities, helping provide and regulate gigawatts of power to grids. EV owners could even benefit financially, selling power to the grid at peak times. "We have seen countries and businesses dial back their net zero commitments at a time when we need to accelerate them," continued Dr. Zeng. "We must unite like never before to tackle our most pressing challenges, and I believe open innovation is the key to supercharging the green energy transition."

Cathay sets new 2030 carbon intensity target in support of its 2050 net-zero goal
Monday, March 25, 2024 Cathay has further demonstrated its unwavering dedication to decarbonising the aviation industry, setting a new target to improve its carbon intensity by 12% from the 2019 level by 2030. This move reinforces Cathay's aspiration to be at the forefront of sustainability leadership and will support its overarching goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The new near-term target aims to improve carbon intensity by reducing the carbon emissions from Cathay’s jet fuel use per revenue tonne kilometre (RTK) from 761 gCO2/RTK to 670 gCO2/RTK. To achieve these improvements, more than 70 new passenger and freighter aircraft, which can be up to 25% more fuel efficient compared with the previous generation, will be joining Cathay’s fleet over the coming years. Accelerating the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) remains the most important lever for achieving the new target and net-zero operations in the long run. Taking one step further to scale up SAF usage on all fronts, Cathay will use SAF to offset 10% of the carbon emissions from employee duty travel on Cathay Pacific flights from 2024 onwards. Since 2007, Cathay has been offsetting all emissions from employee duty travel on flights with the airline using carbon credits through its voluntary carbon offset programme, Fly Greener. This new endeavour is in line with its pioneering position in accelerating the development and deployment of SAF in the region and, more importantly, contributing to its 10% SAF usage by 2030 goal. Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam said: “Despite being a major airline with one of the best carbon intensity performances in the world*, we are determined to improve our climate performance even further via accelerating the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), modernising our fleet and driving operational improvements. This new carbon intensity target will provide necessary drive for actions in the immediate future towards achieving our long-term goals.” As one of the first airlines in Asia to set a target of 10% SAF for its total fuel consumption by 2030, Cathay fully recognises the challenges in transitioning to more sustainable energy in aviation. To address this, Cathay embraces a collaborative ethos, Greener Together, urging all stakeholders to unite in this important pursuit. To support this mission, Cathay has undertaken a multi-pronged approach to forge strategic partnerships with like-minded organisations and stakeholders along the SAF value chain. This includes the introduction of Asia’s first major Corporate SAF Programme for corporate customers to make use of SAF in reducing their aviation-related indirect emissions, as well as co-initiating the launch of the Hong Kong Sustainable Aviation Fuel Coalition earlier this year. Additional information can be found on Cathay’s climate action page on its website. *Based on information published by the LSE Transition Pathway Initiative Centre (TPI Centre) , Cathay Pacific Airways has been among the top five full-service airlines with the lowest carbon intensity since 2014. The TPI Centre is an independent, authoritative source of research and data on the progress of the financial and corporate world in transitioning to a low-carbon economy.

Fujifilm Launches New Water-Based Digital Inkjet Press Targeting for Flexible Packaging Printing Market
FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) announces the launch of the Jet Press FP790, a new water-based digital inkjet press for the flexible packaging printing market. The Jet Press FP790, a new addition to the inkjet digital presses of the Jet Press series, offers customers in the flexible packaging industry high productivity and versatility. With the Jet Press FP790, customers can efficiently produce a wide variety of packaging, including food and household products, even in small volume orders. This is the first time Fujifilm has introduced a water-based digital inkjet press for flexible packaging. The product supports customers’ high productivity with a maximum substrate width of 790mm and a print speed of 50 m/min. In addition to print heads for each CMYK*1 color, two white ink channels are equipped to improve the density of white. For the color printing, the based color greatly affects the appearance of the package. Through the density of white with two white ink channels, the product realizes the vibrant colors on the film substrates*2. Furthermore, by applying the processing liquid before printing, the ink has high adhesion to the water-repellent film substrates. In addition, the product enables high resolution printing with the 1200 dpi X 1200 dpi print head. Jet Press FP790 Flexible packaging printing commonly uses analog printing methods such as flexographic printing*3 and gravure printing*4. These methods require the creation of design pattern plates for mass printing with the same design. Digital printing, including inkjet printing, does not need for printing plates. Customers can directly send their design data to the printing press for printing. It enables the small‐volume production of a wide variety of products and flexible response to customer needs. In 2011, Fujifilm launched its digital inkjet press, the Jet Press 720 (currently upgraded to the Jet Press 750S), to the global commercial printing market ahead of its competitors. The Jet Press series has been highly acclaimed for its high image quality that surpasses the offset printing, and the cumulative number of installed products is more than 300 in the world. Leveraging its inkjet expertise and equipment sales know-how accumulated in the commercial printing market, Fujifilm is now introducing the Jet Press FP790 for flexible packaging. Fujifilm will continue to contribute to the development of the global printing industry by developing and providing innovative products for the printing market. The Jet Press FP790 will be exhibited at the Fujifilm booth at drupa 2024, the International Printing and Media Industry Exhibition to be held in Germany in May. *1 Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black colors. *2 BOPP film and PET film are compatible base materials for this product. *3 A type of letterpress printing in which ink is applied to a flexible rubber or resin plate and transferred to a printing substrate such as paper or film. *4 A type of intaglio printing in which the ink is transferred to the "recesses of the plate" where the design is engraved, and then transferred to the printing base material such as paper or film. Fujifilm Unveils New Inkjet Ink featuring proprietary AQUAFUZE Technology, Combining Water-Based and UV-Curable Ink Technology
FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO, Representative Director: Teiichi Goto) announces the development of a new technology, AQUAFUZE inkjet ink technology, which combines water-based and UV curable ink for wide format inkjet printing applications. The new UV-curable aqueous ink based on the new technology will be launched in autumn 2024. The AQUAFUZE inkjet ink technology is a Fujifilm’s proprietary technology for stable water dispersion of photopolymers*1. Fujifilm has applied its original synthesis technology for highly functional materials and particle dispersion technology. Based on this dispersion, Fujifilm has developed a new UV-curable aqueous ink by combining the formulation technologies of both water-based and UV-curable inks. “AQUAFUZE” logo The UV-curable aqueous ink is available for indoor signage and wallpaper applications, meeting the growing needs of the wide-format market. It provides safe and odorless ink during printing, as well as offering a high level of rub resistance and compatibility with a variety of print substrates. The UV-curable aqueous ink featuring AQUAFUZE inkjet ink technology is expected to become the new standard in the wide-format market, expanding the scope of customers’ business in the future. Ingredients of AQUAFUZE ink Ink fixing process Industrial inkjet inks are classified into three types: water-based, solvent, and UV-curable. These inks are selected by users based on their characteristics and printing applications. In wide format inkjet printing, water-based inks that cure with heat, and UV-curable inks that cure with light irradiation are mainly used. As the wide format field continues to grow, printing applications and substrates are becoming more diverse. As a result, users now require inks that offer high durability for printed materials and stretchability for ink films. These features are necessary for bending and processing of products. In addition, users also prioritize the safety of the ink, including preventing solvent volatilization and minimizing odors generated during printing. This is an important factor when choosing an ink. The AQUAFUZE inkjet ink technology will be exhibited at the Fujifilm booth at drupa 2024, the International Printing and Media Industry Exhibition to be held in Germany in May. The main features of UV-curable aqueous ink developed by AQUAFUZE inkjet ink technology The use of photopolymer dispersion reduces clogging of the inkjet printhead due to ink drying and achieves stable ink ejection. The ink adheres to a wide variety of substrates without pre-coat primers and optimizers. Printed image thickness is reduced, and the ink surface becomes more even, resulting in light reflection, and a glossy appearance. UV curing eliminates the need for a topcoat on the printed substrate. Ink odour is reduced and enhancing user safety. *1 Water-dispersed resin that undergoes a curing reaction upon UV light irradiation Contact Media Contact FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation Coprorate Communications Division, Public Relations Group +81-3-6271-2000 Customer Contact Please contact your nearest Fujifilm Office.
