New Survey Reveals Portugal Popular Destination For Kitesurfing

A new survey by kite control has shown that Portugal is a very popular destination for kitesurfers, new and old. The kitesurfing school has revealed some of the most interesting findings from the survey.

A recent survey has shown Portugal is the second most popular region in the world for kitesurfing. Beaten only by Hawaii, 22% of voters chose Portugal as their favored destination in a poll by Kite Control.

Broken down, the results of the survey revealed that Portugal was most popular among men aged 18-24. While men were shown to be more eager to try Kitesurfing, women were more likely to have experience in the activity.

Age was also shown to be an important factor. Kitesurfing interest for men peaks at 18-24 and declines with age. No one in the 65+ age group was an active Kitesurfer. Women’s peak age group was slightly higher at 25-34. Although, like men, it does decline with age after that point.

The survey also highlighted what people are looking for when they book a kitesurfing lesson. Naturally, good weather conditions were a top priority as well as safety. Kitesurfers further revealed that a helpful teacher was the most important factor to them. However, there was another gender difference here. Though both genders places ‘a helpful teacher’ as the top priority, men favoured safety as their secondary condition while women selected “good weather conditions.”

The last question on the survey asked kitesurfers about their preferred type of location. Warm waters were shown to be the most important location factor as well as “nearby lifeguards and emergency services” and “reliable weather conditions.” Potential learners also marked whether they could take could pictures for their Instagram as the least important factor to consider.

Owner of Kite Control, Francois Berck isn’t surprised by the results. He said: “Obidos Lagoon, which is not far from Lisbon, gives kitesurfers everything that they want. The water here is lovely, peaking at 21°C in August and September. We also get excellent conditions. The wind speed is usually 7 to 20 knots, which is perfect for learners and enjoyable for experienced kitesurfers too”.

According to Kite Control, Obidos Lagoon also has flat waters, ideal for a beginner experience and advanced kitesurfers.

A top kitesurf school in Portugal, Kite Control offers private and group lessons. Kite Control is also one of the first schools in the Lisbon area to offer a tandem kitesurfing experience. Born in Belgium, owner Francois Berck has been kitesurfing since he was a boy. At Kite Control, staff take particular care in a student’s individual goals and ensure that they get the ideal kitesurfing experience for them. Ensuring both safety and fun is a top priority when working with each and every client.
