By sacrificing more substantial content in favor of crude humor, some worry that young people (boys in particular) will get the wrong message. However reluctant reader books have long relied on unconventional topics to encourage kids to read more, and studies have shown that reading for pleasure increases academic capacities regardless of the subject matter of the books in question.
In the November 2011 International Journal of Applied Science and Technology, it was found that boys saw a significant increase in the value of reading when exposed to high interest chapter books on the Amazon Kindle® reader.
Books such as “Ninja Farts: Silent But Deadly” (seen here at http://amzn.com/B00BFWQB1Y) may raise a few eyebrows, but various studies suggest that the benefits outweigh any distaste older readers may have for the younger generation’s choice in literature.
While there are no exhaustive studies on the correlation between the subject matter of books read for pleasure and other areas of academic performance, research on young readers has shown that reading for pleasure is linked to multiple benefits including greater comprehension and grammar as well as increased vocabulary.
Representatives of Zeus Products, LLC, the company behind “The Disgusting Adventures of Milo Snotrocket” series, had this to say about the value of the stories they publish:
“Children today need to be entertained with humor that is not mean spirited. While juvenile humor may be ‘gross’ to some adults, kids really get the value of being able to laugh without being the target of the joke.
