Usafii is an all-natural beauty company founded by Dr. Sharmin S. Dharas. The vision behind the female and minority-owned business is to create cruelty-free products while also investing in and empowering local communities. "We don’t measure by profit,” says Dr. Dharas, "we measure by empowerment.” Usafii means purity in Swahili; Dr. Dharas’s family is from Zanzibar East Africa. All products in the company's portfolio are free of artificial fragrances, parabens, silicone, and SLS.The idea for Usafii began when Dr. Dharas was creating a natural product from coconut and turmeric to help relieve the body aches and pains of her aging father. Through her research, Dr. Dharas discovered that coconut oil could provide therapeutic relief when mixed with turmeric oil. Tumeric is now a base ingredient for all of Usafii’s products.
Usafii started as a concept in a small living room in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is now fulfilling orders worldwide. With a commitment to clean beauty, all natural, and cruelty- free products, Usafii continues to search for exotic free trade ingredients that enhance skin health and empower communities. The company is focused on developing “the best skin products with Ayurvedic spices.”
Since its launch, Usafii has donated over $3,500 to the Aga Khan Development Fund (AKDN). “Established in 1967, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) brings together human, financial, and technical resources to address the challenges faced by the poorest and most marginalized communities in the world. Special emphasis is placed on investing in human potential, expanding opportunity, and improving the overall quality of life.” A portion of all Usafii proceeds goes to the AKDN, supporting initiatives to alleviate poverty and improve gender equality.
Usafii’s signature product is the Turmeric & Cinnamon Lip Balm, crafted with Moroccan cinnamon, turmeric, beeswax, and vitamin E. The lip balm is 100% percent natural and made in the USA, free of additives such asmineral oil, petroleum jelly, and castor oil.
According to Usafii’s research and development notes, “turmeric provides skin health benefits when digested and also when applied topically. As an anti-inflammatory, turmeric can reduce redness, swelling, and scarring, helping to treat conditions such as psoriasis. As an antioxidant, turmeric can impact the skin cells and, in turn, tighten the appearance of the skin, reversing sun damage and slowing the aging process.
