A new company started by Pittsburgh local Russell Michelson has brought name-your-own-price walking tours to the Steel City. A popular business model in Europe, the “free tours” trend is starting to gain traction in the U.S. In early 2018, Michelson saw an opportunity to allow people of all budgets to take a guided tour of Pittsburgh while also allowing him to fulfill his passion of showing people around his city.“I realized there weren’t many options for walking tours in the city, so I decided to start a company that would let anyone and everyone discover all that Pittsburgh has to offer,” says Michelson.
At the end of each tour, customers are asked to think about what the tour was worth to them and pay the tour guide whatever they think is fair. Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours is unique in that they accept all forms of payment, including cash, credit/debit cards, PayPal, and Venmo.
As of now, the company gives tours of downtown Pittsburgh, but plans on expanding to other neighborhoods like the North Side and Oakland during the first half of 2019.
Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours offers tours year round. On weekdays during the winter, they offer “indoor walking tours” that take tourists from historic lobby to historic lobby. This tour that’s 75% indoors allows tourists to see downtown without spending too much time out in the cold.
Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours also offers set-price private tours of Pittsburgh. These walking and/or driving tours are customizable to fit the personal preferences and needs of every customer. They can last anywhere from 90 minutes to several hours, and take tourists into parts of the city they otherwise wouldn’t have known to look for.
