In 2015, the state of California passed new laws to protect the general public after a string of high-profile accidents resulting in serious injury and death during and in between Uber and Lyft rides. These laws required companies to provide $1 million worth of insurance as well as uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage for both drivers and passengers.
Here’s how this coverage works: If an Uber passenger is involved in an accident during their ridesharing session, they will be covered under Uber’s insurance policy as long as their driver’s Uber app is on and functioning. Drivers who become accident victims while their app is on but no passengers are in the car may be covered under a lesser Uber policy, while drivers who do not have the Uber app open at all are only covered under their personal insurance policy.
