More Companies Are Recognising the Benefits of Workplace Mindfulness Programs

A deeper understanding of human behaviour has urged large corporations to see wellness programs as must-haves to further develop a healthy working environment.

Experts agree—mindfulness programs help mitigate workplace stress and improve performance.

In a recent write-up, the Harvard Business Review has stated, without question, “Mindfulness should no longer be considered a ‘nice to have’ … it’s a must have”. More and more companies globally are recognising the benefits of adopting workplace mindfulness programs.

At least 4,000 scientific papers agree that mindfulness programs and practices have a deep impact on how we think, feel, act, relate and perform at work. The research in the paper titled ‘Contemplating Mindfulness at Work (An Integrative Review)’ and published in the Journal of Management look to mindfulness to positively impact overall human functioning.

They go on to say, mindfulness training helps enhance attention spans and those who finished similar training sessions showed remarkable improvement in visual and listening tasks. Mindfulness also boosts personal work relationships, which suggests such programs may lead to better leadership skills and teamwork. There’s no question—major corporations need to adopt mindfulness programs in their employee benefits.

Google and Yahoo were among the first to adopt mindfulness training, and many more are following in their footsteps today. In a December 2015 article in the Harvard Business Review, many CEOs and top executives, including Sattva, CEO Archana Patchirajan, are looking for ways to adopt wellness and mindfulness programs to help boost their employees’ emotional intelligence, empathy and compassion. This is why diverse industries are looking for ways to create happier, healthier employees and a more positive work culture—a great sign that employers have started listening and taking care of their employees.

Mindfulness facilitator and performance coach, Melo Calarco from Mindfulmooves, has seen this firsthand as he conducted mindfulness programs and workshops in Australia’s largest companies including Channel 7, Westpac Bank, Newcrest Mining, ME Bank and many more. With a career spanning over twenty-five years in helping people find balance in their lives, he has seen stronger stress resilience, decreased mental health issues, along with higher productivity and performance among the various organisations he has worked with.

One of their more recent clients, Channel 7, left rave reviews about their program, stating, ‘[They were] able to develop an insightful and engaging program for us here at Channel 7 … [that] covered the right amount of information, delivered in a concise manner that was easy to absorb … [and] had obviously put a lot of thought and expertise into designing it which exceeded our expectations!’

To be a high performer and to avoid stress, burnout and other mental health issues, Melo highly recommends adopting some form of mindfulness training for yourself and/or your workplace. Some simple mindfulness techniques include taking ‘short renewal breaks’ to help people re-focus throughout the workday and following a short meditation habit to help you unwind before bedtime. More importantly, he makes mindfulness fun, engaging and highly interactive through his unique mindfulness programs that people have described as ‘truly transformational’.
