The workshop will be held by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community to get involved in. AFSP provides education, research, and advocacy to take action against suicide.

The organization is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide all over the country. This means engaging with a number of core strategies, including the funding of research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected.

Founded in 1987, AFSP was created out of concern for an alarming rise in youth suicide. Now, since its founding, the organization has reached thousands of individuals who are at risk of suicide, and helped those who love and care for them.

The Michigan Chapter will be hosting the event on September 21 – 22nd, with bereavement training for distributing support and peer-to-peer training locations throughout Michigan.

Among the topics to be covered at the event are the psychological impact of suicide on survivors and the common themes in the bereavement of survivors. In addition to this, attendees will learn what research with survivors shows what is needed going forward.

Other topics will cover principles of longer term clinical work with survivors, and examples of specific clinical techniques for use in grief therapy with survivors. Training will be provided by suicide bereavement trained clinicians.

The Suicide Bereavement Clinician Training Program is intended for clinical professionals seeking to bolster their knowledge and understanding of, and empathetic regard for, people bereaved by suicide.
