25 volunteers from the volunteer group ‘LP132’ partnered Beyond Social Services, to organize a full day community event (Heroes of Tomorrow) for 200 underprivileged youths between the ages of 12 to 18 years old on Sunday, 14th June 2015.

25 volunteers from the volunteer group ‘LP132’ and Beyond Social Services, a Singapore non-profit organization, organized a full day community event (Heroes of Tomorrow) for underprivileged youths on Sunday, 14th June 2015. A total of over 200 children, youths and their families participated in the full day fun-filled event which culminated in a community break-fast dinner for Ramadan and Father’s Day rolled into one. A total of over 80 volunteers and staff participated in the community event, and built friendships and connections with the children and youth, while participating in the activities alongside with them.

The activities included an “Amazing Race” segment that had the youths racing across five stations, as well as a hip-hop dance session conducted by local dance group Pluspoint. The final activity before break-fast was a heart-felt sharing by Josephus Tan, a criminal lawyer, who related his own journey of being a rebel and ex-alcoholic. Josephus left the audience with a reminder to always treasure their loved ones and never take them for granted no matter how dire or trying the circumstances can be.

The event, aptly named “Heroes of Tomorrow”, had two main objectives. One was to inspire the participants to the possibilities that they could create despite the circumstances they are in. The other was to connect the public volunteers to the youths and forge a support network with them. The event raised a total of $54,000 from friends and family who held the same vision for the youths.

"At the end of the day, all we want to do is to give these kids a fighting chance with their lives. So that they can rise up to pursue their dreams and become responsible citizens. They now know that they don't have to look far to find people who care about them,” said Lawrence Nah, one of the volunteer organizers of the event. He also shared, “Heroes of Tomorrow made me realize that I have the power to give back to society. That in itself is powerful.”

"Our mission is to curb delinquency among underprivileged young people and their families and to move them beyond their problems. We believe that our work will have a longer lasting impact if more members of the community step forward to befriend the youths and stand for them. Hence we are always on the lookout for opportunities to work with community partners such as LP132 who are willing to step in and make a difference for these youths," commented Lynn, a volunteer from Beyond Social Services.

“Heroes of Tomorrow” provided a fun, open and safe space that allowed the volunteers and youths to connect authentically. Through this event, the volunteers developed a deeper understanding of issues faced by the youth. More importantly, both volunteers and youths realized that they have the ability to inspire, empower and impact people around them.
