Local ENT Surgeon Talks About Children Suffering Tonsillitis, the symptoms to look out for and when it's important to get it checked out

Local ENT specialist, San Sunkaraneni from Guildford ENT, spoke to us about tonsillitis in children: the signs and symptoms, as well as how his service can assist worried parents.

Tonsillitis is a fairly frequent childhood illness (it also causes problems for many adults). The most common symptom is, of course, a sore throat, but it may be accompanied by a high temperature and, in some cases, breathing issues.

The tonsils are a pair of lymphoid organs that capture germs when they enter the body. Not only do they eliminate these germs, but they also teach the body’s immune systems to recognise them more rapidly in the future. As a result, they aid in the growth of a child’s immune system.

Many parents are concerned that removing the tonsils will interfere with the development of this immunity; however, there is a lot of lymphoid tissue scattered throughout the mouth and throat, as well as other parts of the body, and there is no evidence that removing the tonsils impairs immunological development.

Mr. San Sunkaraneni is a Consultant Rhinologist/ENT surgeon who works at Guildford Nuffield Hospital and Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford, Surrey. He provides both out-patient and in-patient (surgery) care, and performs local anaesthetic procedures in the office. He serves Surrey, London, Sussex, and Hampshire. He also receives referrals from all over the UK.

Mr. San Sunkaraneni works full-time at the NHS at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, UK, and has a weekly outpatient service at Cranleigh Village Hospital. He is also an honorary consultant at Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospital.

Mr Sunkaraneni is a University of London-trained Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgeon from the United Kingdom. During his medical school training, he spent a year pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Anatomy, which sparked his interest in head and neck anatomy and surgery.
