Leathercraft by ava LAU, a line of small wallets made of genuine crocodile/ alligator skins, is live on global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and raising funds to bring the project to life.Artisan Ava LAU specially creates a collection of genuine crocodile minimal wallets for the project and each piece of reward ordered by backers is handmade, one by one, from start to finish. There are also generous rewards, from small leather goods to leathercraft tutorials, for craft lovers and backers who would like to support craft persons and realize the project.
"Leathercraft has been my teenage passion and even though I had established a career in journalism then marketing communication. I took chances to join fringe markets and give tuition from time to time to stay crafty and connected, and when eventually twist of fate did happen, I opened my little workshop by 2002,” says the crafter on the inspiration behind the project. “I am lucky to have hands-on experience in many types of skins from fish to springbok, and they all have unique characteristics and charms”
Crocodile skin being so extensively used by big brands and alike in recent years have only risen in price and exclusivity. Many beautiful scraps are being generated and it is how Ava's idea is kicked. With over 12 years experience working with the material, she has become adapt at using the different parts of the leather.
In the Kickstarter project the crafter offers an interesting line of small wallets, each piece comes in a multitude of colors and finishes, ensuring a personalized look and feel for anyone who like something more than mass produced factory goods. Backers can select from not only skin colors but also glossy or matte skin finish, keychain colors, lining colors, zipper cloth colors and other structural options to ensure each piece is truly individualized.
“This project is crucial to the sustainability of my workshop, which is a 1-man operation. I would unfortunately need to suppress my creativity and shift myself into the manufacturer mode for quite some time,” adds Lau about the process after a successful funding. “Even so, nothing will be rushed to compromise quality as I cherish every piece of work I made. I nevertheless would still be taking custom orders, repairing and alteration jobs.”
