When asked to comment King responded, “ Trying to obtain a child custody arrangement that works can be one of the most challenging aspects of a divorce case. But there are some things you can do to minimize the stress and maximize your chances of getting the best possible outcome.”

One of the most important steps you can take, according to King, is to handle temporary parenting time issues prudently while the divorce case is pending prior to a final hearing.

When asked to elaborate, King commented, “You can divorce your spouse, but you can’t divorce your children. That means that you will have to deal with your ex at least until the kids are grown. You will have to co-parent.”

In King’s opinion the key to successful co-parenting is to always appear willing to compromise, and to be flexible whenever possible. And the time to start practicing that approach is while a temporary parenting schedule is in effect during the divorce case.

“This can make it easier to reach a final settlement with the other parent, or, if the case does not settle, it will cast you in a favorable light before the judge who will be deciding it. Judges like parents who are reasonable and cooperative, and will take such behavior into account when they decide custody issues,” King said.

For example, when the other parent asks you to swap a weekend so he or she can do something special with the children or the children have a party to go, King recommends, “do it but record every occurance in your calendar or diary!”.

On the flip side of things King advises not to ask for too many favors or exceptions to the temporary parenting schedule ensuring the court sees an active and responsible parent.

King also commented about how to handle dating or a romantic relationship before your divorce is final.

In short his comment was, “never introduce someone you’re involved with, to the children, until everything is settled.”

King says, “Generally, it is unwise to be dating or involved in a relationship while you are going through a divorce. But, if you are doing that, at the very least, do not expose your children to it.”

“This will likely antagonize the other parent, make it harder to settle and, most of all, anger the judge, who will develop doubts about your judgment and parental fitness, especially if they find out from the the opposing lawyer via someone’s social media post. ” King said.
