When asked to comment, Huggett said, “Often when small business owners feel that the growth of their business has plateaued, they don't turn to investing money in marketing due to several common misconceptions.”

One of the biggest misconceptions among small business owners is that they don’t need marketing campaigns or to improve on existing ones, something that Huggett says “could be detrimental to your growth goals.”

“Many so-called experts advise small business owners against investing in marketing to grow their business. However, no matter how small a company is, marketing and growth are intertwined with each other."

One of the primary reasons business owners fall into this trap is that they think their products will sell themselves.

“We often don't think about the branding and marketing that went into services and products we use on a daily basis and that have been targeted directly at us as a specific audience. This was done purposefully, and that's the mindset you should have as well," he said.

The marketing of a business, according to Huggett, doesn’t have to be perfect.

When asked to elaborate, he said, "In other words, you don't need to worry about spending tons of money on the best designer to build or recreate your company’s website, for instance. As long as your marketing strategies are strategic and supported by numbers, then this can often be enough to draw in customers you haven’t yet reached.”

When thinking about a potential audience, Huggett said, many small business owners mistakenly try to target everyone.

"Chances are that if you're a small business, you have a niche audience, which is who you should be trying to reach with your marketing endeavors. This is crucial, because you'll need to work to make a statement that will help you engage customers in a very specific business landscape,” he added.

Many people wrongly assume that they will get lucky in expanding their business and widening profit margins.

“Luck shouldn’t factor into your business expansion plans. If it does, then replace luck with a robust and precise strategy to increase cash flow,” he commented

Huggett added that for marketing plans such as creating or revamping a website, small business owners should know their intended market and how to target them in a meaningful way through available tools.
