Stopping the spread of germs from one room to another has always been a high priority for hospitals. However, it is not just hospitals that need to be concerned with cross-contamination. Home floors need to be cleaned just as well, especially now during these times of the reign of the Coronavirus. A recent survey conducted by Temples Pride, the creator of the Dredge microfiber flat mop, revealed that some homeowners are still using outdated mopping methods which pose a risk of cross-contamination. This is dangerous because it guarantees that any bacteria or virus that may be present on the floor is spread to every corner of the house.
A study conducted by the University of Buffalo, State University of New York, showed that bacteria such as S. pyogenes and S. pneumoniae can remain alive and well on surfaces for long periods of time and can be spread around quite easily. The spreading occurs when outdated cleaning methods such as the traditional string mop and bucket are used to clean the floor. The same mop head and water are used to mop the whole house thereby spreading germs.
“The safest way to clean the floor is by using a microfiber mop”, say’s Brian from Temples Pride. “Use one mop pad for every room. Once the pad has been used, toss it in the washer and load a new pad ready for the next room. Doing it this way will give you the best chance at not spreading germs around your house.”
