Property developer and philanthropist, Kenny Slaught of Investec Real Estate Companies continues to raise public awareness of community programs that have tangible positive effect on those who experienced hardship in life. In keeping with his philosophy as an empathetic person and entrepreneur, he has advocated for the Hospice of Santa Barbara and its Parenting After Loss program. As he talks on the importance of social support, particularly for people who have experienced the loss of their beloved ones, Slaught has recently promoted this program on his blog at www.KennySlaught.com.Hospice of Santa Barbara provides a wide range of compassionate care services to individuals facing terminal and chronic illness, as well as to their families. Many of the programs at the organization focus on the needs of children and youth as they struggle with the impending or recent passing of a close family member or friend. About 20 percent of children experience the death of a loved one before they turn 18, and one in 20 children must face the loss of one or both parents before they reach adulthood. Hospice of Santa Barbara endeavors to provide individuals in these situations with free support through a number of programs. This support helps individuals cope with grief to avoid or mitigate depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The Parenting After Loss program runs for eight weeks and acts as a support network for parents and guardians, as well as their children, after the loss of a parent or sibling. The education and support received in this program is designed specifically around the emotional and practical repercussions of death within a family unit. Kenny Slaught notes that through the participation in the program, families gain the tools they need to communicate more effectively with each other and ultimately grow stronger as a unit after experiencing a loss.
