The popular Bradford based charity Save The Mothers Trust is running a campaign to help eradicate Jiggers and restore dignity to the victims’ lives via donations and collections gathered in West Yorkshire and around the UK.

More information is available at https://smtrust.org.uk.

Jiggers is an infection caused by a parasitic insect common in Sub-Saharan climates which leads to severe inflammation, ulceration and fibrosis around the feet, arms and hands. Left untreated or removed with bad equipment it often leads to gangrene, tetanus, amputations and even death.

To help eradicate the disease caused by these fleas in the Congo and restore some dignity to the lives of children and elderly in extreme poverty who suffer with this infection on a daily basis, Save The Mothers Trust is running a campaign anyone in the UK can donate to.

The campaign aims to provide free treatment to every single adult and child suffering with the infection in Congo, distribute the correct tools and equipment they need to combat the disease and spread information about how to effectively protect against these parasitic insects in the future.

The charity has already deployed a team of volunteers led by Qamar Afsar to the Congo who are on the ground helping treat those with the infection and ensuring that every penny donated and collected around the UK is being applied in the right places.

This Jigger eradication campaign draws on the same dedication, skill and expertise that have made previous Save The Mothers Trust campaigns like ‘Educate Ghana’ or ‘The Pakistan Maternity Hospital’ so successful and is a part of the charity’s ongoing commitment to intervene in places and problems where media coverage is lacking.

The Save The Mothers Trust team explains “we are committed to eradicating the Jigger menace in Congo. We are on the ground providing children and elderly with a chance to get rid of these painful wounds and get back to enjoying normal daily activities such as walking, playing and attending school. Any help the public in the UK can provide, is urgently needed and extremely helpful”.

Donations to the Jigger eradication campaign can be made by calling its hotline at 01274 270043 or through https://smtrust.org.uk/jiggers-insect.
