Mark White Fine Art on Canyon Road and Mark White
Contemporary Art in the Railyard District announce Abstract Expressionist, Javier Lopez Barbosa’s summer show: “Music in Color.” The show
will run from Friday, July 5th through Sunday, July 21st and will span both gallery locations. Attendees of the show will have the opportunity to meet Barbosa and talk to him about his process twice: first on July 5that Mark White Fine Art, and then on July 6th at Mark White Contemporary Art. Barbosa’s multi-layered, mixed media on canvas approach brings depth of color and a broad range of textural quality to his work. Some of his pieces have up to thirty-plus layers, with each stratum serving a designed purpose and playing a key role in the compositional whole. Similar to the complexity in a musical composition, Barbosa’s completed artworks are the result of a collaboration of parts becoming one emotion-evoking whole.

Barbosa believes that it doesn’t so much matter what everyone do in life, but rather, how everyone do it. He says that as he paints, he becomes the paint and the canvas; he embodies the presence within the process and ultimately, becomes the love within it. “Love is the magical word and feeling that accompanies my paintings when they leave the studio on their way to find connection in a new home,” says the artist. Just as his paintings embark on a journey from the studio to a new home, Barbosa embarks on a personal journey while creating them. The viewer is the fortuitous recipient of the artist’s passionate process, for it is the viewer that is given the gift of taking in all the energy and love that the artist leaves on the canvas.

Not only is Barbosa a painter, but he is also a musician, so the parallels found between his visual and audible art are striking. Just as music has the incredible ability to stir dormant emotion, so does visual art, and Barbosa’s abstract expressionistic pieces certainly have an emotional draw. The artist’s bold use of color mixed with surprising
textural finishes brings a one of a kind look to his body of work. He has also recently introduced a literal darkness with hues of charcoal and black. The contrast between the luminous, bright notes and the dark strokes brings even more depth to Barbosa’s creations. The artist’s works are alive, moving and fluid – keeping the viewer’s eyes ever
moving, ever-interested in the colorful story unfolding.
