Downtown Miami concert hall kicks off the summer season with Memorial Day Comedy Festival, featuring Earthquake, and announces summer lineup that includes Buena Fe, Raphael and more.

Tickets are still available for the 9th Annual Miami Memorial Day Comedy Festival at the James L. Knight Center Theater in downtown Miami, according to premiere ticket reseller ConcertBank.com. The annual festival features a name comic and local comedians appearing at the hottest comedy clubs in the area. In addition, the Knight Center Theater’s summer lineup includes internationally acclaimed Spanish singing sensation Raphael and controversial Cuban duo, Buena Fe, among others.

This year’s Memorial Day Comedy Festival features the self-styled comedian’s favorite comedian, Earthquake. Born Nathan Strohan, the comedian better known as Earthquake has been shaking stages since the early 1980s with his no-holds-barred routine drawn from his own life experience. His tag line, “These Ain’t Jokes” is the simple truth, according to the comic, who claims to have once set off a military “Broken Arrow” incident when he dropped an active nuclear missile during a military exercise. Earthquake has stared in HBO comedy specials, and was recently a guest on a segment of The View that featured personal favorite comedians of The View co-hosts.

“The venue is a great one for intimate shows like comedy shows,” said a ConcertBank.com representative. “With fewer than 5,000 seats, it’s the ideal space for audiences and performers to connect. Unfortunately for many fans, it also means that Memorial Day Comedy Festival tickets are in short supply, even on third party ticket sites.”

The James L. Knight Center Theater will also be hosting a return engagement by Buena Fe, a Cuban duo whose 2014 appearance at the theater caused controversy and sparked threats of protests at the venue. The two singers are openly controversial politically in Miami, with its large Cuban population, many of whom objected to the group’s appearance because they had recently played at the birthday party for Fidel Castro, and had made negative statements about The Ladies in White, a Cuban protest group that enjoys wide popularity in the city. At the time, Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Giminez stated that the city couldn’t cancel the contract because it would violate the Constitutional tenet of free speech.

The James L. Knight Center Theater, named for the newspaper magnate who contributed $1 million to its building fund in the 1980s, is owned by the city of Miami, and often books acts that are culturally significant. Because of its small size and the popularity of the acts that it books, James L. Knight Center Theater tickets often sell out, but can usually be found on the secondary market.
