April 17 event will take place at the American Association for Cancer Research ("AACR") national meeting in Chicago

Randy Micheletti, JD, President and Founder of Incubate IP, will co-chair the panel discussion “Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property: Career Opportunities for Scientists” on April 17, 2018, at the national meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research ("AACR"). The session, which will take place at Chicago’s McCormick Place, offers insights into the rewarding, but challenging world of Technology Transfer (TT) and intellectual property (IP).

“There are tons of great opportunities for scientists other than at the lab bench,” said Micheletti. “Technology transfer and IP careers offer scientists the chance to help bring their colleagues’ innovations to market, and ultimately make a huge impact on millions of lives. It takes knowledge and the right network to get to success, however. This panel can be a starting point.”

Micheletti’s co-chair on the panel is P.K. Pham of the National Institute Mental Health/NIH. The session covers the licensing or sale of IP, including patents, patent applications, know-how and trade secrets from one party to another in exchange for financial compensation and/or further development of the technology. TT like this is the basis for many of the biggest deals in biotech, pharma and technology.

The session will discuss what scientists need to know to get started on an IP or TT career path. We will explore career opportunities available to scientists with various levels of training, and whether attending law school is really required. (Spoiler alert: it’s not.) Representatives from law firms, government institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, and universities such as the University of Illinois at Chicago will provide a lively discussion of their IP/TT experiences and career paths.

Micheletti, who is a member of the Illinois Bar, has represented technology clients large and small for nearly a decade. He has been licensed to practice before the US Patent & Trademark Office since 2003. After earning a BA in Chemistry and a MS in Organic Chemistry, Micheletti received his Juris Doctor from the Chicago Kent School of Law in 2009.
The panel will take place April 17, 2018, 12:30pm, McCormick Place room W192.
