The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has established standards for plugs and socket-outlets used in member countries. There are 15 distinct types of plug & sockets rated for the various operating voltage and amperage ratings. Some types of sockets—such as the Type H and Type O—are used exclusively in Israel and Thailand respectively.

The non-standardization of electrical infrastructure for domestic use has had limited success. Despite the release of an international standard for universal plugs more than four decades ago, its adoption across nations has not been widely adopted. The operation of electrical appliances and devices on incompatible plugs can cause the device to malfunction or suffer permanent damage.

The World Power Plugs compatibility tool allows users to receive comprehensive guides to power plug compatibility issues between user-selected source and destination countries. The guide lists the IEC types used in both countries with visuals of all relevant socket and plug types with search-specific recommendations for universal adapters and voltage converters. The tool offers comparison capabilities for 217 countries.

According to a spokesperson for World Power Plugs, “We are happy to announce the launch of our compatibility check tool for all IEC plug types. The goal of our website is to help international business and leisure travelers avoid situations where their devices cannot be charged because of incompatible hardware or worse, face emergency situations without the ability to power their personal devices.”

World Power Plugs is a travel resource website developed in Houston, listing all major types of power plugs used around the world, their technical specifications, and any known compatibility issues. More information is available at the URL above.
