Hurricane Recovery Efforts Request Utility Knives, Particle Masks, Work Gloves

In the aftermath of hurricanes in Texas and Florida, local recovery groups put out the call for utility knives and other supplies to help in cleanup and rebuilding.

Businesses as far north and Michigan and Maine are joining together to assist in the cleanup and recovery efforts after the recent catastrophic hurricanes in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean. Their calls for donations include items that most people don’t think of when pulling together supplies to send to the hard-hit communities – utility knives, work gloves and other supplies that will be needed as residents of the affected states begin digging out from under the rubble left behind by Irma and Harvey.

“When most people think of disaster relief supplies,” said a spokesman for MJH Innovations, which distributes Cutter Master Maxx Utility Knives, “they think of canned goods, water, diapers and clothing. Those are obviously vital in the immediate aftermath of any disaster, but there’s also a need for items that will help as people start cleaning up and trying to restore their properties. Basic work supplies, such as utility knives, flashlights, work gloves and dust/particle masks, are vital to those efforts, and are often hard to find in the days and weeks after any physical disaster.”

The list of supplies being requested by one company in Holland, MI, for example, includes bottled water, canned food, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, work gloves, utility knives, rubber or plastic totes and cash donations. Those supplies will be sent to communities in Florida and Texas that were hit hard by the recent hurricanes.

The Holland business is not alone in requesting the specific cleanup supplies most needed by those in communities that are trying to clean up after the disastrous hurricanes and floods. Churches and community groups in Tennessee, Massachusetts and many other states are also collecting cleanup and repair supplies to send south. While the lists vary, utility knives, work gloves and dust masks appear on nearly every one of them.

Work gloves and dust masks are vital basic safety equipment in flooded environments, where mold and bacteria can contaminate nearly every surface and permeate the air, the spokesperson noted.

“As anyone in construction knows,” the MJH spokesperson said, “a durable utility knife or safety knife with an ergonomic handle is worth its weight in gold in many situations, especially in construction and cleanup work. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the recent hurricanes in Florida, Texas and the Caribbean, and we want to see them supplied with the equipment they need to safely restore their beautiful communities.”
