Morris, King & Hodge, P.C., Driver Safety Scholarship contest calls on Alabama students to suggest ideas for ending injury and death in distracted driving accidents.

The Huntsville personal injury law firm of Morris King & Hodge, P.C., has announced an essay contest to promote safe driving and award three scholarships to 2015 graduating seniors or rising freshmen in Alabama colleges and universities.

The law firm's first Driver Safety Scholarship contest will raise awareness about texting and driving, which car wreck attorney Harvey B. Morris says poses a serious safety hazard for young drivers in Alabama.

Participants in the essay contest are asked to create an original public service announcement that explains the dangers of texting and driving and provides practical steps to ending this reckless driving practice.

"Every day, people are killed and about a thousand are injured in car accidents caused by drivers who are texting instead of paying attention to the road ahead and traffic around them," Morris says.

"We're looking for some bright young minds in Alabama to help educate drivers, especially teen and young adult drivers, that texting and driving leads to serious car accidents that can be avoided."

The contest is open to seniors in the class of 2015 who are enrolled in Alabama high schools, and college or university freshmen enrolled in four-year programs in Alabama. Prizes include $1,800 for first place, $700 for second and $500 for third.

Contestants are asked to submit an original essay of at least 1,000 words that provides clever, well-researched ideas about the dangers of texting and driving. The tone can be light-hearted or serious, as long as it's informative, helpful and original, Morris says.

The deadline for submitting entries is 11:59 p.m. CDT Dec. 31, 2014.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says crashes that involve a distracted driver kill more than nine people and injure 1,060 more every day.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says on its Distraction.gov site that 10 percent of all drivers younger than 20 years old who are involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. "This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted," the NHTSA says.

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger safety, "but, because text messaging requires visual, manual and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction," the NHTSA says.

Morris King & Hodge, P.C., represents personal injury and wrongful death victims from across North Alabama, including those hurt by car wrecks, workplace accidents and premises liability (slip-and-fall) accidents, as well as by faulty consumer products and dangerous drugs.

"We recognize that young people are our communities' most precious resource," Morris says. "Part of our commitment to the North Alabama community is helping students receive a college education to pursue their career goals."
