Right now is a great period for technology. Technology is taking society to new places that previous generations couldn't even fathom. However, when there is progress in one area there is usually a decline in another. Lets take a look into self driving cars and the auto transport industry.The auto shipping industry is a booming industry moving 20,000+ vehicles each month and seems to be getting stronger as our society is moving to new places, buying cars online because of better deals then their local dealerships, and military moving personnel. However, there are a growing number of people that sees the demise of this industry. As great of an industry it is currently, the end is coming sooner than later. Self driving cars will kill this industry and it isn't a bad thing, it's progress.
Uber has freight currently being shipped using self driving semi trucks, every major car company is releasing driving assist vehicles and have their eyes set on release full blown self driving vehicles shortly. GM is lobbying to get a self driving vehicle released to the mainstream public in 2019. This breakthrough in technology is going to happen, fast.
As self driving vehicles are released the adoption rate will determine how long the auto transport industry has left. Currently looking at a 12-15 year window of good sales and shipping numbers, but it will start to decrease before this time frame. No matter how cheap car shipping is now or in the future, this industry going to die. The reasoning for this is simple. It's easy to use an app. Tesla has an app where you can summons the vehicle to a front door or front of a business from the parking spot. The vehicle will pull out of a parking spot and pick you up at the front door without anyone touching the steering wheel or even being in the car. Soon enough that will be able to be used to summons a newly purchased vehicle from other states and across the country even.
Progress is a positive thing and society adopting and purchasing a full self driving vehicle is one step closer to the demise of the vehicle transport businesses that many own and operate within the industry. Progress is going to change industries, it happens with every generation. Some for the better and others for worse. Society needs to see these things coming early so everyone can all prepare properly.
