Home Remodeling Industry Takes On Hardest Client Questions

With homeowners across the country investing in a home remodel, industry experts take on some of the hardest hitting questions they face

Home remodeling is one of the most popular investments made by homeowners across the country. While certain rooms, like the bathroom and kitchen have historically gotten more attention than others, Honolulu construction and remodeling experts note that all areas of a home are “fair game.”

However, because of the significant investment required for home remodeling services, many clients considering hiring an Honolulu remodeling contractor have some hard-hitting often difficult-to-answer questions. To help ease the concern and uncertainty of a home remodel projects, industry experts have gathered to provide answers to some of the most common questions they receive from homeowners contemplating a remodel.

One of the most commonly asked questions is where to start? Determining the approaches to home remodeling is the first step in a homeowner determining the contractor they need to hire. If a homeowner has started to get some estimates, there are a few reasons they may be extremely varied. For example, general contractors typically focus on the execution and installation of a homeowner’s vision. This means the homeowner is taking on more of the legwork in ensuring the design and the materials decisions are handled, along with project management.

With a design-build approach contractor, a homeowner receives guidance through the entire remodeling process from the initial design to the final construction with help and advice throughout. Most design-build firms will handle the heavy-lifting, so homeowners don’t have to. However, most these firms also only focus on the medium and larger scale remodeling projects.

Another common question is about the cost per square foot for home remodels. This is another question contractors are constantly asked that doesn’t have a simple answer. It’s dependent on the level of service offered by the contractor. Some factors that impact the cost per square foot include the type of contractor (described above); level of finishes; complexity and size of the space or the spaces needed to remodel the space.

While HGTV episodes may claim that full remodels take just “three weeks and a few thousand dollars” this is rarely the case and contractors making these promises should be avoided like the plague. Designing a quality remodel is a process that takes time. There are several phases to any project, including the design phase and then construction. Most remodels will take between eight and 14 weeks based on the scope and the size of the project. Keep in mind, that’s just the time period for construction.

It’s crucial for homeowners to have realistic expectations, which is, unfortunately, something many contractors no longer provide in a twisted effort to get more jobs. Avoiding renovation nightmares is only possible with real expectations and quality contractor who is a “straight shooter.” Make sure no remodeling construction is begun before the design is finalized and all the materials have been selected. It’s crucial for the materials to be waiting for the crew – not the other way around.

The remodeling industry is full of reputable, honest service providers, but there are some proverbial “bad apples” in the group. By understanding some of the toughest questions, it’s possible for homeowners to have a positive remodeling experience that exceeds expectations and produces the desired results for the space being renovated.
