With growing food and animals for human consumption being the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and large scale environmental problems many environmentally conscious people are opting to grow their own food and rear their own animals at home to provide their needs. But many vegetables are seasonal and most animals take a large amount of space to grow.

Aquaponics is an emerging solution that requires very little space and provides a year round supply of healthy fish and vegetables. Best of all aquaponics can be designed as a fully self sufficient system requiring minimal inputs of power and water.

In aquaponics edible plants are grown in a gravel medium in a similar way to hydroponics. The big difference is the plant food is the waste of the fish also being grown in the system. The steady supply of fish fertilizer to the plants results in fast growth of very healthy vegetables like lettuce, peppers and tomato. Food can be grown in much less space in this type of system with yields being 5 to 20 times higher than regular vegetable growing.

As the fish in the aquaponics system mature they can also be eaten and replaced with young growing fish so the system provides an ongoing healthy supply of food.

To make it as easy and painless as possible for people to start their own aquaponics systems in their backyards or greenhouses aquaponics enthusiast Larry Romeo has put together a Free Aquaponics Mini Course available on his website at the link above.

The course includes information on where to get the materials for an aquaponics system, step-by-step instructions for building a system that works and the best way to create a safe and self sufficient system.

Other topics covered include insights into the easiest plants and vegetables to grow in an aquaponics system, the best materials to use in an aquaponics tank, the most suitable fish for aquaponics systems in each region, how to care for fish and even how to use goldfish in a small scale aquaponics fish tank.
