Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region Reflects On Going Purple Campaign To Raise Awareness Of Dementia

Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region marked June dementia awareness month with its Going Purple campaign.

— Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region (HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, reflects on it’s Going Purple campaign in hopes of raising awareness for dementia.

June was Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month. In order to help raise awareness for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region “went purple” for the month. Purple is the official colour of the movement, started by the Alzheimer’s Association.

“This is a cause we believe in strongly at Home Care Assistance,” says Brian Shevel, president of Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region. “This campaign was to help others become more aware of dementia, which affects millions of people around the world.”

Over 47 million people suffer from dementia worldwide. Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region says there are ways to care for those with dementia. They offer tips on how families can better manage loved ones with dementia.

“Being consistent is probably the number one tip we can give any family,” Shevel continues. “Calling and visiting on the same day and time and engaging in regular activities together, such as cooking, are some ways to make this happen.”

Shevel says patience is another important factor to keep in mind when caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. He says remaining calm when communicating and avoiding frustration can go a long way.

“It takes a lot of patience and mental strength to ensure you are sensitive to their circumstance. That’s why we suggest working with an organization like Home Care Assistance whose caregivers are trained to engage with seniors with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.”

The Going Purple dementia awareness campaign ran for the entire month of June.
