“The number of auto crashes in general seems to be trending downward over the past decade,” says Andras Szantho, founder of the Szantho Law Firm. “However we are not seeing that trend in regards to hit and run collisions.”
Hit and run accidents present a unique problem for those involved, especially if the fleeing driver is not caught. Claims have to be made through one’s own insurance, and depending on circumstances, coverage and other factors, it can become a complex process. In many instances there are still high out-of-pocket expenses for the person who remained at the scene.
“There are a number of theories as to why the rate of hit and run accidents is increasing. However, the root cause is that the person fleeing doesn’t want to face the consequences of their actions,” concludes Szantho. “While the best way to reduce incidents of hit and run would be for those who leave the scene to face stiffer penalties, we can still do our part. If you witness a hit and run note any details and report it to law enforcement.”
