Heather Taylor has launched a campaign to be the first Canadian to complete a mid-Pacific row. She is raising money for Emmanuel International and TEAR Australia.

Heather Taylor has launched a new fundraising campaign to row across the Pacific Ocean in order to raise funds for Emmanuel International and TEAR Australia. Heather is aiming to row 2,100 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean, which will see her begin at Monterey CA and land 60-90 days later in Hilo, Hawaii.

Heather is the youngest daughter of Els and Brian Taylor, and granddaughter of the Emmanuel International founder, George Middleton. Her childhood was spent playing hopscotch on the tiles of the El Canada office, as her dad is its longest serving member.

She grew up loving the water and has always enjoyed rowing. Now she is taking that talent and embracing the ultimate challenge of rowing across the Pacific.

Heather explains that she will be equipped with 120 days of rations for the feat, along with a water maker and three sets of oars. Unlike many other challenges of this type, she will be on her own until she arrives in Hilo on the Big Island.

The campaign means she will be the first Canadian to complete a mid-Pacific row, and the first Australian to do it solo. She emphasizes that more people have climbed Mount Everest than have crossed an ocean in a rowing boat.

She is aiming to raise awareness for charities she cares about and the work they do. It is also a way for her to make a difference. One of the projects funds will be going to is Emmanuel International “Nguvu na Hadhi” (Strength and Dignity).

She states: “I could be living in Yemen right now, where my mom was born. I have met others who have not shared my privilege and as far as I can tell, we’re not that different from one another. We can all do something about the injustices we see. Rowing an ocean is certainly not the only way to do it, but through it I am hoping I can make a small drop in a very large ocean.”
