Photodynamic Therapy, also known as PDT is a treatment that involve a particular type of light and photosensitizing agent or chemical substance. These photosensitizers when exposed to wavelength of light produces a form of oxygen that can kill nearby microbial cells, fungi, bacteria or viruses. These photosensitizing agents are injected into main bloodstream for the treatment purposes. Photodynamic therapy is used in treating skin cancers, esophageal cancer, acne problem and many others. Light source like Laser, intense pulse lights, LED and many other light sources are used for the treatment purpose.
This photodynamic therapy has three steps. Application of photosensitizer drug, incubation period and activation of light. The photosensitizing agents are injected in the main bloodstream. The agents are then consumed by various cells, both normal and infected. Then comes the incubation period typically ranging from minutes to days. Finally, the target tissues are exposed to specific light waves to destroy the infected cells. Photosensitizers including 5-aminolevulinic acid or ALA (Levulan), porfimer sodium (Photofrin) and methyl aminolevulinate (Metvix) are used for the treatment purpose. More drugs are expected to become available soon.
The global market for photodynamic therapy is growing, although having few side effects. It can sometime have effect on skin and eyes. Patients are asked to avoid direct sunlight and bright light inside rooms. Photodynamic therapy can sometimes cause skin burn, pain in stomach or swelling.
