Earlier today, Global Autism Project finally announced a major update of its Skillcorps program, which has been in development since 2014. The main aim is for BCBAs to use their skills to help train teachers to work with kids with autism all over the world… but it does so, differently.

Molly Ola Pinney, Founder at Global Autism Project, says: “We are expanding Skillcorps big time. The need is so great. We get inquiries every day from people all over the world, asking for our help. Anyone familiar with NGOs will probably have noticed how everyone else has good intentions but what ends up happening is they go to a country, do a quick training, build a school or drop off some shoes with no follow-up in place to make sure that the work is actually serving the community. This is a problem because resources are being used to start projects but no thought is given to sustainability, or the long term consequences these projects have on the community at large.”

So as a welcome breath of fresh air, Global Autism Project’s SkillCorps members, who will train teachers in other countries to teach kids with autism, educating them in evidence based teaching methods. By training them, you empower local teachers to become the experts in their community. Global Autism Project then provides ongoing training to their partners in each country ensuring that they are getting the highest quality information and resources. They chose to make this move because they believe that the best people to train kids with autism in other countries are the local teachers in those communities.

Molly Ola Pinney also said “We want to give kids with autism in other countries hope. With Skillcorps, they have a fresh new possibility. We want our volunteers to feel they have given back and used their skills in a unique way. Trying something new is always a risk, but it’s a risk we believe is worth taking.”

Global Autism Project was established in 2003. Since Day 1 it has always aimed to improve the lives of people with autism all over the world.

The next Skillcorps adventure is set to launch July 2018. They are currently accepting applications from people in the field. To find out more about Global Autism Project or to apply to travel with Skillcorps, visit https://www.globalautismproject.org
